Hello. Welcome back to the Manuskript website - with new shiny domain name, after the old one appears to have been stolen
I guess that means we'll have to update the website... there could actually be some news soon. Soon-ish.
Until then, take care...change your bookmarks! Mike x
Celebrating 21 glorious goth years! We are honoured to return to grace the stage, we first played in '94!
Save Our Scene 2 Festival. Our first London show for 7 years! Headlining Stage 2...
We have two! (Thanks Ben) Now all we have to do is find some young impetuous gothic supermodels to wave them about on stage...
So, I found this absolute gem on a VHS tape a few months ago and it has taken me as long to find a working video machine...
Whilst indulging in a spot of reminiscing today, I was reminded that if we wound the clock back a little over ten years, YouTube wasn't even a thing...
Electrowerks, 7 Torrens Street, London EC1V 1NQ. Manuskript Headline Stage 2 on Saturday.
So, I found this absolute gem on a VHS tape a few months ago and it has taken me as long to find a working video machine.
October 1996 and the Central TV cameras were there. Skip to near the end and you'll see some callow youths (with surprisingly sharp cheekbones) strumming away... it was a lunchtime performance I believe. It was meant to be a midnight mass up at the Abbey - but it absolutely hammered it down that night, so we thought better of it. There was no way we were going to fit any amplification in there this time around, so acoustic guitars were the order of the day.
A few years later, Tim told me that there were probably as many people outside the pub trying to get in, as there were inside trying to get out. He also said he couldn't be bothered to try because it was "..only Manuskript". Ahem!
Whilst indulging in a spot of reminiscing today, I was reminded that if we wound the clock back a little over ten years, YouTube wasn't even a thing and everyone was still using Livejournal. So... 21 years ago, how on earth did anyone manage to organise anything ... let alone a congregation of 200 goths up on the North Yorkshire coast. Crazy. But Jo, we are very glad you did and that we all managed to fit into the corner of the Elsinore (lucky we were a three piece then) to play that first WGW set.
I have searched high and low for the actual set-list but all I can tell you is that we started with Rapscallion (we always did back then) and ended with It's Alright by East 17. What was I thinking? What I did find (over at theblogginggoth.com) that made me chuckle today was Jo's hand written line up for the weekend. Check it out and there we are kicking off proceedings down at the bottom.
I have to say... I absolutely can't wait until the weekend.
We've got two of 'em! (Thanks Ben)
Now all we have to do is find some young impetuous gothic supermodels to wave them about on stage for us... Any volunteers? Seriously! If you want to jump on stage for a few minutes on Saturday and can wave a stick with a piece of cloth on the end elegantly, without dismembering either Christian, Tom or Paul... then drop us a line!

Favourite Manuskript song | Maybe Aliens for the bonkers guitar. Faves to play live would be: Knives, Semaphore, Avaritia. |

Favourite one-liner | The Wad does not indulge in one-liners. |
Favourite food | Tasty filthy meat, ranging from upmarket to basically anything on a skewer. |

Formed by Paul Morris (Guitar) and Mike Uwins (Bass/Vocals) as a means to pass the time whilst skipping lectures back in 1990, Manuskript definitely did not expect to be the subject of a new band biography, twenty five years later. In fact back then they weren't really expecting to have leave the flat... but after a few persuasive words (somewhere between a dare and blackmail) from their housemates, the classic 'two-men-and-a-drum-machine' line-up hit the stage the following year and have been doing it (albeit sparingly) ever since and have established themselves as one of the best loved acts on the UK goth scene.
However, it wasn't really until Ant 'Tamioso' Wilson answered the cliché that is the 'ad in guitar shop window', that the band were able to take their songs on the road... mainly because he had a car. Squashed into a Rover 230, Manuskript set about playing just about every Goth night in the country... invited or not! Luckily people came, people saw and bought a lot of demo tapes, which may have had something to do with 'that bloke from Resurrection Records' arriving backstage at a London show, producing a small but perfectly formed record contract.
Next to enter the fray was old school friend and adventurer Tom Quick, freeing Mike of bass-playing duties and instantly increasing Manuskript's average IQ, height and number of nipple piercings. The first EP - the seminal 'I Can't Believe It's Not Goth!' EP was released to co-incide with the Whitby Goth Weekend 1995. In a blatant attempt to try and convince a few more folks that it really was goth, Tim Chandler (then of Autumn of North) was persuaded to join as live synth player. Tim came with complete with 128 voice polyphony, his own crimpers and a very deep voice. Fifth and final permanent member Christian Tonkin joined up in 2003. Christian had previously endeered himself to the band whilst playing guitar for D.U.S.T, when he decorated the shared dressing room with toilet rolls, Andrex puppy-style - resulting in everyone being thrown out.
Those in the know will also tell you that as far as live show, there aren't many better live UK goth acts than Manuskript. The energy and interplay between the band on-stage is infectious and their dashing style, wicked sense of humour have charming audiences worldwide for the best part of 20 years. If you haven't caught them yet... you're in luck, as they are dusting themselves down and coming out to play soon, starting with a special appearance at Whitby Gothic Weekend, April 2015 - a festival which over the years, they have made their own - returning (by popular demand) more times than any other band.
